Wager vs deposit vs milestone cashback — which earns more?

Which type pays more depends almost entirely on your turnover-to-deposit ratio. Deposit cashback wins if you deposit large amounts and play through them slowly. Wager cashback wins as soon as you recycle a balance more than a few times. Milestone cashback has the highest headline number and pays nothing at all if you fall short of the threshold.

The three models

Wager cashback pays a percentage of turnover, continuously, win or lose. No threshold, no cliff. Usually no wagering requirement, because it's a rebate on money already staked.

Deposit cashback pays a percentage of what you deposit, on a tier ladder. Your play is irrelevant to the calculation. Often carries a playthrough before withdrawal.

Milestone cashback pays a fixed lump sum on reaching a wagering threshold. Nothing below it, defined amount above it.

02

The variable that decides it: turnover multiple

Everything turns on how many times you recycle a deposit before it's gone.

Turnover multiple = Total wagered ÷ Total deposited

Deposit 1,000, wager 12,000 before running out or withdrawing, and your multiple is 12x. This number varies enormously by play style — low-volatility slots at small bet sizes can push it past 30x, while a few large bets on a high-volatility game might not clear 3x.

Deposit cashback pays on the denominator. Wager cashback pays on the numerator. That's the whole comparison.

03

Worked comparison, three play patterns

Assumptions: 4% house edge, wager cashback at 10% of theoretical loss, deposit cashback at 2% of deposit, milestone paying 122 at 20,000 turnover.

Pattern A — the grinder

Deposits 500 monthly, plays low-volatility slots at small stakes, turns it over 20x.

Deposited: 500
Wagered: 10,000
Theoretical loss: 400
TypeCalculationReturn

Deposit500 × 2%10.00

Pattern B — the whale depositor

Deposits 10,000 monthly, plays high-volatility games at large stakes, turns it over 3x.

Deposited: 10,000
Wagered: 30,000
Theoretical loss: 1,200
TypeCalculationReturn

Pattern C — the near-miss

Deposits 800, wagers 18,000 — just short of a 20,000 milestone threshold.

TypeCalculationReturn
Wager720 × 10%72.00
Deposit800 × 2%16.00
MilestoneBelow threshold0

Pattern C is the one to build the article around. 18,000 wagered, 90% of the way to the milestone, and the milestone programme pays nothing. Wager cashback paid on all 18,000.

04

Why milestone cashback is riskier than it looks

The headline is usually the biggest number on the page, and it's the only one with a cliff.

Three specific failure modes:

Falling short. You get zero, not a pro-rata amount. There's no partial credit at 95% of a threshold.

Chasing the threshold. This is the real cost. A player at 18,000 with a 20,000 threshold now has an incentive to wager 2,000 more they hadn't planned to. On a 4% edge, that costs 80 in expectation to unlock a fixed bonus. Whether that's rational depends entirely on the bonus size — and the psychology of being close to a threshold doesn't run that calculation.

Reset periods. Many milestone programmes reset monthly. Turnover doesn't bank; you start from zero each cycle. A player who reaches 80% every month for a year earns nothing all year.

The structure is designed to be attractive to people who will clear it comfortably and to extract additional volume from people who won't. If you're not reliably past the threshold with room to spare, treat the headline as decorative.

05

Where deposit cashback works

It's the best structure for exactly one profile: large deposits with low turnover multiples.

That's typically high-volatility play at large stakes, or players who deposit, play briefly, and withdraw. Since deposit cashback ignores play entirely, low turnover isn't penalised — it's the point.

Two things to check before relying on it:

Wagering requirements. Deposit cashback frequently arrives as bonus credit with a playthrough. A 10% deposit rebate at 30x wagering is worth a fraction of 10% in cash, and on a 4% edge game a 30x playthrough on the rebate amount is expected to consume most of it.

The ladder shape. Deposit tiers commonly peak in the middle and flatten or decline at the top. The best effective percentage is often not at the largest deposit size.

Quick answer by player type

Your patternBest structureWhy
Regular play, moderate stakesWagerRecycling multiplies the base it's paid on
Large deposits, few betsDepositTurnover multiple too low for wager cashback to build
Very high, reliable volumeMilestone, plus wager if availableThresholds cleared comfortably
Irregular or exploratoryWagerNo threshold to miss, no deposit size to hit
Bonus huntingNeitherBonus turnover usually earns nothing on any of them

For most people, most of the time, it's wager cashback — because the turnover multiple is above 5x and there's no cliff.

07

Can you have more than one?

Often, yes, and the combinations are worth knowing.

Wager + deposit — commonly available together. Different bases, no conflict.

Wager + milestone — also common. Milestone acts as a bonus on top of continuous accrual, which removes most of the threshold risk.

Deposit + milestone alone — the worst pairing, because neither pays on ordinary turnover. Between deposits and below thresholds, you're earning nothing.

If you're choosing an operator rather than a programme, the presence of wager cashback underneath is what makes the other two safe to have.

08

Frequently asked questions

Which type of cashback pays the most?

Wager cashback for most players, because turnover is typically several times deposits. Deposit cashback wins at low turnover multiples — large deposits with few bets.

Does milestone cashback pay if I don't reach the threshold?

No. It's all-or-nothing at the cliff, with no pro-rata payment, and many programmes reset the counter monthly.

Can I get more than one type at the same operator?

Frequently. Wager plus deposit, or wager plus milestone, are common combinations paid from different bases.

Which type has wagering requirements?

Deposit cashback most often, milestone sometimes, wager cashback usually not — it's a rebate on money already staked rather than a bonus.

Common questions

How does cashback actually work?

WagerSave is the affiliate at every partner casino. When you wager or deposit, the casino pays us a commission — and we pay you back a share, typically 50%. No spins to clear, no catch.

How quickly do I get paid?

Wager and deposit data syncs every 2 hours — once confirmed, it's withdrawable. Deposit cashback needs a 1× wager first. Milestone cashback pays per stage once the partner confirms the wagering — usually a few days, up to 2 weeks.

Do I need a special code or link?

Yes — sign up at the partner via your WagerSave referral link and activity tracks automatically. Existing accounts can be linked too — contact support and we'll connect it.

What's the catch?

There isn’t one. Casinos pay us a commission either way; we split it with you 50/50 — and on mystery box partners we pass on 100%. Every cashback entry shows its source casino, type and amount in your wallet ledger.

Which casinos are supported?

30+ partners across crypto casinos, CS2 cases and mystery boxes, with new partners added monthly. The full live list with current rates is on the Crypto Casinos page.

What we publish

The blog covers three things: guides that explain how cashback, house edge and RTP actually work; breakdowns of partner offers so you can compare real value; and news that affects your bankroll — rate changes, new partners and regulation.

New posts every week. No fluff, no affiliate-speak — if an offer is bad value, we say so.
