RTP isn't what you think it is
RTP — return to player — is the percentage of all money staked that a game pays back across its full mathematical lifetime, usually tens or hundreds of millions of spins. A 96% RTP slot returns 96 for every 100 staked over that sample. It is not a promise about your session, your day, or your first thousand spins, and it was never measured over anything resembling one.
The sample size problem
Take a 96% RTP slot. The published figure comes from the game's mathematical model, verified by a testing lab, and it converges over something on the order of ten to a hundred million spins depending on the game's volatility.
You will play a few thousand.
Over 1,000 spins at 1 a spin, your actual return can comfortably land anywhere between 40% and 200%. Not as a freak result — as an ordinary outcome. On a high-volatility slot where the top features carry most of the return, 1,000 spins that never trigger a bonus round can return under 30% while the game remains exactly as advertised.
The number is real. It's just measured on a timescale that has nothing to do with you.

RTP and house edge are one number
House edge = 100% − RTP
96% RTP = 4% house edge. 99.5% RTP = 0.5% house edge. Slots advertise RTP; table games quote edge. Nobody advertises "4% house edge" on a slot because it reads as a cost, and 96% reads as a return.
Worth knowing when you're comparing across game types, because the two conventions make like-for-like comparison awkward on purpose.
Where the return is distributed matters more than the total
Two slots both at 96%. One pays small wins constantly, the other pays almost nothing until a bonus round that occasionally returns 500x.
Identical RTP. Completely different experience, and completely different bankroll requirements.
Hit frequency is the number that describes what playing actually feels like, and it's rarely published. RTP tells you the long-run cost. Volatility tells you how violently the path to it swings.

The same slot can have four different RTPs
This is the part most players don't know.
Many studios ship a single game with multiple configurable RTP settings — commonly something like 96.5%, 95%, 94% and 92% — and let the operator choose which version to run. The game looks identical. Same artwork, same symbols, same features, same name in the lobby. The paytable maths underneath is different.
Two casinos can both offer the same popular title, and one of them is 4.5 percentage points more expensive to play.
How to check:
- Open the game's info or paytable screen — most jurisdictions require the active RTP to be displayed in there.
- Compare against the studio's published figure for the title.
- If the in-game figure is materially lower, the operator has selected a reduced configuration.
- If no RTP is displayed anywhere, treat that as information in itself.

What RTP excludes
Bonus terms. Advertised RTP is the game's raw return. Playing through a bonus with a 40x wagering requirement doesn't change the game's RTP, but it substantially changes what you end up with, because the requirement forces enough turnover for the edge to grind the balance down.
Side bets and gamble features. The double-or-nothing gamble button on many slots typically runs at a lower RTP than the base game. It isn't included in the headline figure.
Jackpot contributions. On progressive slots, part of the published RTP sits inside a jackpot that a tiny fraction of players will ever hit. A 96% progressive where 2% of the return lives in the jackpot behaves like a 94% game for everyone who doesn't win it — which is nearly everyone.
That last one is worth repeating. Progressive RTP figures are mathematically honest and practically misleading.
RTP and cashback
Cashback is calculated from the house edge, so RTP determines your rebate directly:
Cashback = Wagered × (100% − RTP) × Rate
Over 10,000 wagered at a 10% rate:
The uncomfortable structural point: lower-RTP games pay more cashback and still leave you worse off. A 94% slot with a rebate is more expensive than a 98% slot with the same rebate. Cashback narrows the gap between the two; it never reverses the ordering.
Choose the game on RTP. Take the cashback as a rebate on a decision you'd have made anyway.
